Now that the ACC has realigned using Tobacco Road as the Ho Chi Minh Trail by siphoning the heart out of the Big East, It is about to get stronger with the additions of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College. There is no doubt, regardless of system, that the ACC will indeed be a true, power conference that will rival all of college football.
So, if you like numbers and college football, you'll like this spread. And even though this is only based on the TSR Rankings, When looking closely, I think you'll see that the findings are not far off from anything else out there. In fact, I don't believe they're any less accurate than any official system you'll find. One thing for sure, This System like any other, works the same for every team. Now on to the results.
Who would have believed that the ACC would stand toe to toe with the mighty conferences of the Midwest and South. Well, they did in average ranking, coming in first but the Pac-10 muscled in on the party. I think fans, when looking closely, will find that the ACC was a much better conference than many realized. The rise of Clemson and especially Maryland with its three consecutive 10-win seasons, has propelled and solidified the powder blue conference. Now, can the Terps hold onto the [affectionate term inserted] Fat Man ?
The basketball conference was already an icon in America, now Florida State will have intense company for football and the "wide right" series will be for the conference crown. It will be interesting to see what the Big East and it's new additions, can do to countermand the quality losses.
Surpises? The MTN West, though, only having one team in the Top Twenty versus the Big Twelve's four, the MTN West's lowest ranked team was 76th while the Big Twelve had two teams ranked in triple digits. Also, The MAC, even with their best finish ever, ranks 11th. Their bottom is among the worst in the country, which is no surprise.
Down below are two more breakdowns. The ACC won the average rank by category but the SEC took the total points average. So which was the best conference for 2003?
